Are you ready to see Lake Tyrrell in a different light?

Welcome to Lake Tyrrell, where the beauty of the night sky meets the rich heritage of one of Australia’s most sacred landscapes. During this tour we’ll capture the stars as they reflect off the pink salt lake, creating a visual spectacle that’s truly one of a kind.

This workshop balances hands-on shooting experience combined with educational workshops and exploration of diverse astrophotography locations. You will gain valuable skills and memorable experiences throughout the tour.

Beyond the incredible photography opportunities, this place holds deep significance to Indigenous Australians, who have long used the stars for navigation, storytelling, and spiritual connection. As we frame the stars above, we’ll also be honoring the ancient star lore passed down through generations, connecting with the timeless history that lives in these skies. Let’s dive into four nights of creativity, reflection, and wonder.

I’m Jason, and I'll be your host and guide on this astrophotography tour. I'll provide you with a concise introduction to astrophotography, equipping you with fundamental knowledge and tools essential for capturing remarkable nightscape images akin to my own.

This is a unique opportunity for a small group of adventurers, don’t miss out and book now!^

What you’ll need.

To gain the most out of my workshops, I do recommend that you have the following:

  • Camera - DSLR or Mirrorless, wide angle lens with fastest aperture you have

  • Tripod

  • Intervalometer (for long exposures, stacking, and time lapse photography)

  • Laptop (PC or Mac) for the editing porting, with basic Adobe Photography suite (Lightroom & Photoshop) installed

  • Warm, comfortable clothing and gumboots

The following are recommended but not critical:

  • Filters for sunset/sunrise photography

  • Lens warmers

  • Small Plastic bags to protect tripod feet from salt deposits

What is included in the workshop:

  • Accommodation - private rooms with your own private bathroom for 4 nights

  • 4 days of photo guide services from a professional and award winning photographer

  • Instruction in a small group of 5 participants with a 5:1 ratio (5 students per instructor)

  • Night photography session throughout the entire photo tour

  • Editing & post-processing sessions during the photo tour

  • Transportation for the full duration of the photo tour

What is not included in the workshop:

  • Airfares and any associated travel to get to the accommodation

  • Meals, drinks, and snacks

  • Visa or passport fees (if applicable)

How to get there.

We would be staying at the Lake Tyrrell Accomodation, located in Melbourne’s north west, near Sea Lake, Victoria, Australia. If you’re leaving from Melbourne, the drive up is around 5 hours from the CBD. Otherwise, the closest airport is Mildura Airport, which is around a 2.5 hours drive from Sea Lake, Victoria.

Itinerary.

In my experience of running workshops, it does not work to have a fixed schedule. Weather conditions can be unpredictable so I like to have a plan but have it flexible depending on the outdoor conditions. Below I’ve outlined what would be covered in the workshop.

  • Check-in is from 1500. We will meet in the Lake Tyrrell Accommodation courtyard for a quick briefing at 1600.

After dinner we will meet back at the courtyard at 1830 when we will muster and head to our first night photography location on Lake Tyrrell.

We will focus on time lapse photography, stacking, and star trails.

  • After a good night's sleep you can explore the town of Sea Lake in the morning, or even go for a sunrise shoot at the lake.

We will meet at the courtyard at 1500 to head out to the next night shoot location for scouting before sunset. This will allow us to visualize compositions that we will take when the stars come out, and for those who wish, get some golden hour landscape images. We will then break for dinner and meet back at the same shooting location at 1800, before darkness fully sets in. We will work on stacking and focus stacking together to bring incredible clarity throughout the entire image.

  • The morning will be a post processing workshop starting at 0900 and will go for approximately 3 to 4 hours. We will edit your images together from start to finish touching on some of my tried and true techniques to bring the image to life.

We will then break for lunch.

We will again meet at the courtyard around 1700 to head to our third night shoot location to learn scouting and visualizing compositions for when the stars come out. We can also take some sunset landscape images while we explore. This will be a night you can practice everything we have learned.

  • This night is reserved for a secret spot to capture the Milky Way over a very unique foreground.

After enjoying a group lunch/early dinner we will head to our last location for the tour. Get ready for some mind blowing scenery.
